The first day of the Monsoon Session of Parliament began with disruption in the Lok Sabha, prompting Speaker Om Birla to adjourn proceedings till 12 noon amid continuous sloganeering by Opposition MPs.

The ruckus broke out during the Question Hour, with Opposition members raising various issues, forcing a temporary halt to proceedings. Speaker Birla urged MPs to maintain decorum and submit formal notices for discussion on issues of concern.

“You have not come here to raise slogans. The House functions as per the rules and regulations. The government is ready to respond on every issue,” said Speaker Birla, emphasizing the importance of constructive debate.

At the start of the session, Speaker Birla also expressed condolences over the Pahalgam terrorist attack that claimed 26 lives, stating that the incident had shaken global conscience and reaffirmed the nation’s zero tolerance towards terrorism.

The House paid tributes to several former members, including Kishan Kapoor, Girja Vyas, Kumari Ananthan, and others from various states.

Ahead of the session, Birla appealed for cooperation among all political parties, calling Parliament the “sacred temple of democracy,” and stressed the need for constructive discussions for the smooth functioning of the House.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also addressed the media, referring to the session as a “celebration of victory,” especially in the context of Operation Sindoor, highlighting the valor of Indian forces.

The Monsoon Session, scheduled from July 21 to August 21, will include 21 sittings across 32 days, with a break between August 12 and August 17 for Independence Day celebrations. Final decisions on debates and legislative agendas will be made by the Business Advisory Committees of both Houses.
